Why busts are painted differently from figures
A bust deliberately leaves out everything below the chest and concentrates attention on the head, the expression and the upper part of the clothing. The painter therefore has nowhere to hide an inaccuracy: the face is the main theme and decides the whole impression. At the same time the area is larger than on a figure, so it is possible to work with fine transitions, the texture of skin, a beard and the structure of cloth and leather - and it is exactly that which attracts collectors to busts.
The pirate motif is among the favorites in bust making, because it offers great freedom: scarves, hats, earrings, scars, leather straps and varied cloth all give room for a color approach that uniformed subjects do not allow. The choice of shades is entirely up to the painter, as no prescribed palette exists.
Wash the castings first in lukewarm water with dish soap and a soft brush, so that remains of the mold release agent are removed. Cut the parting seams and the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp cutter, level the surfaces with a file and sand them gently; with resin work with wet abrasive and protect your breathing. Join the parts with super glue and complete the gaps with filler, because on the large area of a bust every untreated joint shows once painted. A thin, even coat of base paint follows - on busts a gray or flesh toned undercoat works well. Build the face up in thin layers from the shadows to the highlights and leave the eyes and the lips for the end. For clothing and leather, oil paints suit well for a slow blending of tones. Display a finished bust on a base at eye level, so that the expression stands out.
