Print Scale RAF Dark Earth strips is a sheet of waterslide decals in the British camouflage shade Dark Earth, intended for creating camouflage fields and their transitions on aircraft models without spraying.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of decals by the manufacturer Print Scale in the British camouflage shade Dark Earth. They are not national insignia or technical stencils: they are colored strips with which the camouflage fields and their boundaries are created on a model, without your having to mask and spray. The manufacturer does not state a scale for this line; the strips are used as the particular model requires.
Dark Earth was one of the two upper shades of the British land camouflage scheme in which the machines of the Royal Air Force flew from the end of the 1930s. On the upper surfaces it was combined with the shade Dark Green into irregular fields; the boundary between them was, according to the factory and the period, either sharp or softly sprayed. It is precisely this boundary that is among the hardest parts of painting a model, and the decal strips deal with it without an airbrush.
Waterslide decals hold reliably only on a smooth glossy base. First spray the surface with a gloss varnish, therefore, and let it cure thoroughly. Dip the decal briefly, leave it to rest on its paper for a moment until the backing releases, and slide the strip into place. Soak the excess water up with a paper towel and apply a softener, so that the decal settles onto the engraved lines and the rivets. With long strips work in shorter sections, so that the material does not ripple. Once dry, varnish the whole model with a matte coat: this closes the edges of the decal over and unifies the surface.
