A set of pigment powders for dirtying railway models with rust, soot and coal dust.
Responsibility details are not available.
Steam as well as diesel traction leaves a very characteristic layer on vehicles and on the track. Greasy soot settles around the boiler and the smokebox, a rusty deposit from the brake blocks clings to the running gear and the buffers, coal dust is left on the floor of goods wagons, and on the ballast dust mixes with oil dripped from the bearings. Each of those kinds of dirt has its own shade and grain size, and that is exactly why railway dirtying cannot be dealt with by one universal brown powder.
A pigment is a finely ground colored powder with no binder. It is applied dry with a soft brush into the corners where real dirt would hold, and the excess is simply swept away. If you want to fix the result, go over the area with a fixing agent or with mineral spirits, after the evaporation of which the powder stays attached to the surface. Dry work can be repeated without the risk that the set will ruin the work done underneath it.
Besides locomotives and wagons they also serve on siding structures, a ramp, a coal store or a signal box. The same shades work on railway equipment in a diorama with a military theme, where armored trains and flat wagons with tanks ran on the track. It is a good habit to start lightly and add gradually: powder is hard to take away, whereas another layer can be added at any time. On vehicles in service the dirt builds up from the bottom upward, so the deepest tone belongs on the running gear and the finest veil only below the windows and on the roof.
