A display plinth with a rectangular footprint of 15 x 10 cm. The dimension is aimed at models that do not fit into a square: at vehicles, machinery, longer scenes and multi-figure compositions, where one direction is markedly more important than the other.
A rectangular footprint has a property a square does not. It has direction. The longer side tells the viewer which way to look, and a model placed along this axis gets a natural run-up. An experienced exhibitor therefore does not sit a model in the middle but moves it roughly to one third of the length and leaves a free area on the other side. The empty place is not a mistake, it is a pause. It is thanks to it that a model looks as if it were heading somewhere instead of merely standing.
A side ratio of 15 to 10 photographs well even with an ordinary lens. The shot can be filled with the model and yet room for a shadow is left around it. In photography it pays to set the plinth so that the longer side runs slightly at an angle into the shot, because the composition then has a depth that a frontal view does not give. In a display case a rectangle also helps quite practically. Models can be lined up one behind another and each has its own clearly delimited territory, so they do not intrude on one another's space.
