What you are buying

Boxes of rectangular shape made of MDF board. As an accessory for a diorama such a shape comes into its own as a crate, a container or a bin within a scene; it serves equally well on a modeling bench for storing small parts so that they do not roll away. The dimensions and the number of pieces are given on the box.

Working with MDF

MDF is an absorbent board, so it calls for a different approach from plastic. Before painting, go over it with a primer or with thinned PVA glue, otherwise the paint soaks into the edges and the surface stays uneven. Lightly sand the cut edges with fine sandpaper. They are glued with PVA wood glue, or with cyanoacrylate when in a hurry; free the joint of dust beforehand.

Tips for a scene

• Suggest the wood grain with a thin glaze and a dry brush, not with a heavy coat.
• Rub the edges and corners back with a lighter tone; that is where crates wear first.
• Darken the top of a box with dust and dirt and clog the bottom with soil.
• Lay a few boxes askew or upended; a tidy stack looks artificial.
• Let damp material dry thoroughly; an absorbent board could warp.
• Store them dry; damp does MDF no good.
