What the set is good for

Roman numerals are a small thing on a model that gives a scene definiteness. A year on a memorial plaque, a number on a monument, the dial of a clock on a tower, lettering on a gravestone or a house number on a facade place a scene in a particular spot and time better than another barrel or crate. Painting characters like that with a brush is work at the limit of what is possible, which is why people reach for a ready-made set from which to put the number they need together.

Where you will use the numerals

They find a use on historical and fantastic subjects, on collector's bases and the plinths of figures, on buildings and their fittings and on the accessories of a diorama. The characters go together freely, so from one set you can assemble various numbers as needed. How many characters the set holds, how tall they are and what material they are made of is given by the manufacturer on the packaging; choose the glue accordingly.

How to work with them

• try the layout out dry first, and only then attach the characters
• watch for a common baseline and equal spacing, as a character set crooked shows at once
• with a longer year, work from the middle character out to the ends
• clean and degrease the surface before applying them
• choose both the way of attaching them and a suitable glue according to the material given on the packaging
• go over the finished inscription with a clear coat, so that the edges blend into the surrounding surface
