The royal palm is recognized by its smooth pale trunk, which widens at the foot and in the upper part passes into a smooth green section. The crown is made up of several massive pinnate leaves, and the tree below it stays bare, so the whole impression rests on a slender vertical. It is planted along streets, on promenades and in front of the entrances to residences, where it forms regular avenues.
Three pieces are supplied, the tallest 11.4 cm, the middle one 10.1 cm and the smallest 7.6 cm. They come finished and colored through, with no assembly involved. Three graded heights allow an avenue to be founded in which not all the trees are the same, which matches a real planting filled in step by step.
Palms fix the setting of the action at once: a harbor, a colony, a South American or Pacific battlefield, an airfield in the tropics. That is exactly why few other markers are needed in a scene for the subject to work. Set them in a row along a roadway with even gaps and a slight alternation in the turn of the crown, so that the avenue does not look like copies of one mold.
It is good to leave free space under the crown, because a palm has no lower branches and dense bush undergrowth at the trunk would needlessly muddle the subject. The heights chosen match a smaller adult palm in HO and a full-grown tree in N and smaller scales.
When seating them into a concrete sidewalk or paving it pays to cut the hole wider than the foot of the trunk and fill the gap with fine sand colored gray. The trunk then looks set into the paving rather than laid on it, which with smooth-trunked palms is especially easy to see.
