Conifers form the backbone of woods at middle and higher elevations, and on a layout they do work broadleaf trees cannot manage: they fill a slope, close off the view into the background and give a scene a cooler, more northern mood. A spruce has a narrow conical crown carried almost down to the ground, so several can stand close together and still not look overcrowded.
The bag holds two trees, one 12.7 cm tall and the other 10.1 cm. That difference is the most valuable thing about this package: two trees of equal height side by side always look artificial, whereas a pair differing by roughly a quarter of their height creates the impression of naturally grown timber at once. The number of pieces is given in the name itself, which saves searching when choosing.
When planting them, leave unequal gaps between the trunks and place the smaller tree slightly behind the larger one rather than beside it; the depth of the scene grows markedly that way. The lower branches of a spruce reach down low, so there is no need to deal with undergrowth beneath them; darker conifer litter is enough, and it also hides the anchoring of the trunk. If you are building a continuous wood, combine these two packages with several lower trees for the background and leave the tallest pieces in the foreground. And reckon with a conifer wood being dark: for the eye to find anything in it, smuggling a lighter element into the growth pays off, a single dead or broadleaf crown for example.
The coloring of a spruce is cooler and darker than that of broadleaf trees, and that is exactly what creates the contrast a scene is after.
