Ballast size 0 - Melaphyre, a 1 kg package

This is a loose scenic material, not a kit. The package contains crushed natural stone sieved to a single size fraction, which is used as a ballast bed for track, as the surface of unpaved roads, as an embankment or as a base for the terrain work of dioramas. Melaphyre is a dark extrusive rock, so this is a material with a markedly dark tone tending toward gray and brown-black; the exact shade of individual batches can differ slightly with natural stone.

Grain size

The designation size 0 corresponds to the size range in which the manufacturer grades its stone. The range runs from the finest dust through grain sizes matching smaller model sizes up to coarser fractions; size 0 belongs to the coarser steps of the range, and it therefore suits places where the ballast is meant to read clearly as individual grains. A package weighing one kilogram is intended for larger areas and longer stretches rather than as a small pot for a single diorama.

Use

• First level the area and apply a layer of glue, or pour the stone straight on and shape it dry.
• Spread and shape it with a soft brush, so that the grains stay in an even layer.
• Fix it with thinned PVA glue with a drop of detergent, which soaks into the layer, or with an ordinary fixing agent for scenic materials.
• Once dry, the surface can be tinted with thinned paints, washes and pigments and blended in with the surrounding terrain.

Who the material is for

For builders of dioramas and cabinet scenes, for railroad modelers and for anyone who wants real stone under a model instead of a printed texture. The material is universal and is not tied to a single scale; what decides is the grain size relative to the model.
