Tracks, wheels and fenders take the most work during painting and at the same time they are the first thing that tells the viewer whether the model is convincing. This set brings together eleven items that follow on from one another from the base coat to the last splash of mud, so there is no need to collect them one by one.
The base is a quartet of acrylic shades: Rubber and Tires for rubber, Dark Tracks as the dark undertone of the track metal and a pair of rusts in a light and a medium tone. The metallic sheen of the worn faces is handled by two pigments, Polished Metal and North Africa Dust. Then comes Tracks Wash, which brings out the links and the recesses between the teeth. Two Oilbrushers, Rust and Dusty Earth, have the brush built into the cap, so the oil paint is applied in spots and blended away to nothing. The set is closed by the Splashes Dry Steppe effect for spattered dry steppe soil and the Heavy Earth paste for the coarse deposits that settle behind the fenders.
The layering goes from hard to soft: first the acrylic, then the wash into the recesses, then the oils for smooth transitions, and finally the pigment and the paste on the edges. Each group uses a different thinner, so the lower layers are not dissolved during the work. The combination of dry and wet effects lets you tell apart a vehicle from the dusty steppe and a machine that has just fought its way through a muddy road.
The set is not tied to one period or to one army. Rust, wear and dust look the same on a half-track from 1943 and on a modern wheeled armored vehicle.
