A pair of finished sycamores 7.6 and 5.7 cm tall. A mature broadleaf tree of the floodplain with a pale mottled trunk, suited to water and to the edge of a pasture.

The American sycamore is among the most massive broadleaf trees of the eastern United States. It seeks out the damp soil of floodplains, river banks and waterlogged meadows, where it grows into a broad upright crown. Its mark of recognition is the bark, which peels off in plates and reveals a paler layer underneath; the trunk therefore looks marbled even from several meters away, and on a model it can be told apart from the trees around it at first glance.
The set holds two trees, the taller measuring 7.6 cm and the lower 5.7 cm. They are supplied finished and colored through, so there is no armature to glue and no foliage to apply; to seat them, a hole in the terrain or a drop of glue on a base is enough.
The differing heights help wherever a stand of trees is meant to look natural and uneven: by a ford, along a millrace behind a mill, or on a boundary strip between fields. The taller piece is best placed nearer the edge of the scene as a framing element, while the lower one is left deeper at the back so that the perspective is drawn out. Because the sycamore tends to be associated with water, it comes off well paired with a dried-up channel, a small bridge or a watering place.
The heights given match a sturdy tree in the railroad sizes HO and N, and they serve just as well in military scenes in smaller scales, where a tree at full size would swallow most of the area of the base. Before gluing them in it pays to stand both trees dry in position and turn them so that the denser side of the crown faces away from the viewer; the scene then feels airier and the subject behind the tree is not hidden.
In the American landscape the sycamore tends to be a companion of water, so it suits the company of moisture-loving grasses and low bush undergrowth at the foot of the trunk. The transition between terrain and tree thereby loses the hard edge that gives a model away most often.
