A bust is looked at from every side and has no single correct front position. A round plinth accommodates that. It has no corners that would determine where the front is, and at every turn it looks the same, so a viewer can walk around the model and the composition does not fall apart anywhere. With an angular plinth, by contrast, a line arises out of every corner, which the eye compares with the outline of the model, and an asymmetrical turn then acts like a mistake, even when it was deliberate.
A round base can be rotated smoothly, so when hunting for the best angle you do not have to move the model all over the table. It is enough to turn the plinth a little and the light falls elsewhere. That is essential with busts, because it is exactly the side light that decides how the modeling of the face reads and how the transitions on the cheek stand out. The dark version at the same time brings no color of its own into the shot and the lower edge of the composition stays clean. In a display case a round outline softens an otherwise right-angled row of shelves.
