Modeling nippers with a single-ground blade, meant for separating plastic parts from the sprue. The basic rendition of the maker's own tool range.
Responsibility details are not available.
On ordinary nippers both jaws are ground to a wedge and the plastic is squeezed between them from both sides. A single-edged blade has one jaw flat; that one works as a backing plate, while only the opposing edge cuts. The cut therefore comes out straight, with no whitened crush mark and with no stub that would have to be sanded down.
The tool is meant for parting the sprue gates on injection-molded parts, that is for the first step of every build. It proves itself above all where a part cannot be sanded afterwards: on the thin edges of canopies, on slats, on small wheels. It is not used on etched sheet or on wire: the hard material would chip the blade.
The maker's own range holds several single-edge nippers; this is the basic one of them, while the costlier siblings of the same firm aim at a round blade and at special jaw shapes. Anyone who wants to try a single-edge nipper without reaching straight for the top of the line usually starts here.
The blade will only last a long time if it is used exclusively on polystyrene. After the work it is enough to wipe the jaws and now and then put a drop of oil into the joint; twisting sideways tends to be the main reason modeling nippers die before their time. It also pays to set them down closed, so that the edge does not rest against the hard surface of the table.
