Grass tufts are the quickest way to bring life into a scene. Instead of the lengthy business of making your own growth, you place a ready-made clump of blades exactly where you need to draw the eye: at the foot of a wall, in a ditch, at the edge of a road, between cobblestones or on the base under a figure. It is precisely the irregularity that makes the result convincing; a continuous band of growth over the whole area gives a model away at first glance.
The tufts are listed as 5 mm. In 1:35 scale that corresponds to roughly 17.5 cm of real grass, that is the kind of growth that grows along roads and by walls. In 1:48 scale it works out at about 24 cm and in 1:72 scale at roughly 36 cm, that is taller grass on an unkept verge. Depending on the scale of the build you can therefore easily work out where the tufts suit and where they would already look too tall.
