Eight acrylic shades for Bundeswehr equipment in Afghan service: sand and clay tones, brown, brown-gray, light olive, bronze green and a very dark tone.
Responsibility details are not available.
German units arrived in Afghanistan with equipment in the European three-tone finish, which in the dusty country around Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif made them a target. The vehicles therefore received a new, considerably lighter coat. The set covers exactly that change: sand beige, clay beige and yellow-brown form the desert base, brown and brown-gray serve for blotches and shadows, light olive with bronze green keeps the link to the original European scheme, and a very dark tone stays on vision blocks, tires and deep recesses.
Where the shades will be used: the Fuchs wheeled carrier, the armored Dingo, Marder tracked fighting vehicles, wheeled Boxers, Unimog trucks and the container bodies of field bases. They are usable on gear, crates and load carriers on which the same color family appears as well.
How to work with it: the shades of this range are mixed for an airbrush, but they can be applied with a brush as well. Desert finishes fade quickly, so it pays to lighten the base slightly toward the sun and to darken the lower parts with a dust wash instead. On machines that were repainted in the field, the boundaries between the blotches stay soft and irregular.
The eight tones named above are what the set contains, so it is clear which have to be added separately.
A light desert finish gets dirty quickly, and on a model that is desirable. Fine clay dust clung to fenders, around entrances and near the areas people stepped on, and it created a continuous film that in the end determined the overall impression of a vehicle more than the camouflage itself.
