A millimeter and a half between the grooves is the value modelers reach for most often, because it covers the band from construction formwork to boarded cargo beds. The carrier sheet is a millimeter thick, the grooves are cut a third of a millimeter deep and have a V profile, so a readable line remains between the boards even after spraying.
The most conspicuous fault on finished cladding is usually not the pattern but the edge. A millimeter sheet held against a corner shows a white strip a whole millimeter wide, which in reduction corresponds to a board several centimeters thick. The solution is simple and costs a few minutes of work: chamfer the edge to a wedge. The sheet is laid face up on a flat surface and abrasive paper glued to a hard block is run at a slight angle from the edge inward, always in one direction. Material is taken off the back so that the grooves on the face stay untouched. When the chamfer is done, the edge is lost on the model and the joint in the corner looks like a junction of two boards rather than a butt of two sheets. A grit of around five hundred is enough, and a finer paper then only smooths the marks.
In 1:48 scale the spacing gives a board over seven centimeters wide, in 1:35 scale something over five. That is exactly the dimension of an ordinary plank, so the sheet suits barn doors, paling fences, the side walls of trailers and the floors of platforms. In 1:16 scale, by contrast, it creates the fine vertical boarding that tool cabinets tend to have. It pays to keep the offcuts, because doors can be assembled in parts from narrow strips of the same pattern and the joint between the leaves then hides in a groove.
