A polystyrene sheet 1.0 mm with V-grooves every two millimeters, groove depth 0.40 mm. The spacing corresponds to a board roughly seven centimeters wide in 1:35 scale. Format 150 x 300 mm.

The pattern with grooves every two millimeters is the most sought-after among diorama builders, because when reduced one to thirty-five it corresponds to a board around seven centimeters wide. Planks of exactly that width were used for wagon beds, walkways, trench revetments and the floors of warehouses. The sheet is a millimeter thick and the groove takes four tenths, so the pattern stands up to rougher treatment while building terrain.
Styrene has to be drilled slowly. A fast-running bit rubs, the material melts under it and instead of a hole you get a crater with a rim stuck around it. The best results come from a hand holder or a mini drill at the lowest speed with a sensitive touch. For holes over two millimeters it pays to pilot-drill with a thin bit and only then widen, otherwise the point skids off a groove and the hole comes out off center. A wooden backing belongs under the sheet, so the bit can rest against it at the moment it breaks through, otherwise it tears the back out. The burr around the hole is removed by turning a larger bit between your fingers.
Most often the load beds of trucks, crates, hatches, wooden walkway gratings and covered footbridges. In larger scales the spacing stands in for cladding of narrow slats, in smaller ones for wide board cladding on barns. The presence of the grooves does not prevent surface finishing: once assembled the grid can be roughened with a wire brush, supplemented with scratches and finally glazed so that the wood acquires a grain. Holes for screws, eyes and fittings are drilled only after the part has been glued to the frame, because a thin sheet on its own flexes under the pressure of the bit.
