Westland Welkin is a specialist publication from the 4+ series by Mark I, devoted to the British high-altitude fighter with a pressurized cabin. It is a book, not a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designation 4+ in the name belongs to the imprint of the Mark I publishing house and is not a scale and not incomplete text. The imprint issues monographs of individual aircraft types, and this volume is devoted to a machine that does not make it into most survey books at all. The product is a printed publication.
The Westland Welkin was a British single-seat twin-engine fighter designed for combat at great altitude. For its day it had several unusual features. The cabin was pressurized, which was then rare in British practice, and the wing was given an exceptionally large span so that the aircraft would keep its lift in thin air. It was powered by high-altitude versions of the Rolls-Royce Merlin with a matching supercharger. The machine came about as an answer to the fear of high-altitude reconnaissance and bombing flights, but in the end that did not materialize on the expected scale. Only a small number of machines were built and the Welkin practically never reached operational service. That makes it all the more interesting as a technical chapter on the problems that flight at great altitude brings with it, from fogging and icing of the cabin to the behavior of aerodynamics in thin air.
For anyone interested in developmental dead ends and experimental hardware, for modelers looking for an unusual subject, and for collectors of aviation literature.
