This set of acrylic paints for painting figures in winter clothing holds, according to the manufacturer, four shades: MIDGREY FS-36357, LIGHTGREY FS-35630, WHITE FOR FIGURES and MATT EARTH FS-34088. The three gray-white tones cover the whole range from deep shadow to the highest highlight, and the fourth color adds an earthy cast for dirtying down.
A winter oversuit is very hard to paint in pure white. Snow, frost and canvas washed several times give the fabric more of a settled gray, and so the build starts with the middle gray as a base, goes on with the lighter tone on the raised surfaces, and only the sharpest edges of the folds get white.
The matte earth color belongs on the hems of the coat, on the knees and on the footwear. It is applied in a heavily thinned, thin coat, so that the impression is of soaked and muddy fabric rather than of a solid coat of paint. All the colors are water-thinnable, dry to a matte surface and take further coats and pigments well.
Giving the FS standards for three of the shades makes it easier to compare them with paints from other ranges, if a modeler is combining several sources. The set is part of a wider range of shades for figures, in which the neighboring sets have the same make-up of four bottles, only for other armies and other periods.
It suits infantry in winter oversuits as well as vehicle crews in white overclothing, where the gray tones come in for shading sheepskins and gloves.
The set can be combined with your own palette without any trouble. Anyone painting figures in oils can use the gray shades as an acrylic base and only bring the fine transitions out in oil afterwards; acrylic dried matte suits such a method far better than a smooth glossy surface.
