A set of two plastic kits in 1:24 scale from the French maker Heller: the Renault Estafette van and the Renault 4 TL car, both in the guise of the French gendarmerie. The combination of a light car and a van in one box adds up to a ready-made subject for a small scene, because the two vehicles make a logical pair. In cars 1:24 is a larger format, so the interior and the small fittings stand out.
The Renault Estafette was a light van with front-wheel drive and a cab over the front axle, built from the end of the 1950s for decades. A low floor and compact dimensions made it the typical French utility vehicle of tradesmen and of postal and state services. The Renault 4 is one of the most widespread French cars of all: a simple vehicle with a large tailgate, long suspension travel and a gear lever coming from the dashboard. The TL designation belonged to one of the ordinary levels of equipment. Both vehicles in service colors were part of the everyday look of French towns and roads through much of the second half of the twentieth century.
Plan the build vehicle by vehicle and do not mix the parts together, because sets of two models in one box invite exactly that. Finish and paint the interiors and the chassis before you fit the bodies. Single-color service finishes have nowhere to hide a flaw in the surface, so the time spent sanding seams, priming and checking against the light pays off. Spray the body in thin coats and let it dry properly between them, and polish it at the end. Glue the glazing only once it has been painted and use a glue intended for clear parts, so that no fogging occurs. Apply the decals of the service markings over a gloss base and unify it at the end with varnish of the degree of sheen you want. Glue the lights, mirrors and beacons right at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
