About product

Photo-etched set for the Me-309 in 1:144 scale

In 1:144 scale an aircraft is so small that detail cannot be created by shape — it has to be created by thickness. That is exactly why photo-etched sheet makes more sense here than in larger scales: it replaces features that would come out of a mold as indistinct bumps. The set from the manufacturer Brengun is intended for the kit of the Me-309 aircraft in this scale. The particular make-up of the fret and the number of parts are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The Me-309 was a German experimental fighter of the Second World War, meant to follow on from an older successful design. Only a few prototypes were built and it never reached series production. Technically it was an all-metal single-seat monoplane with retractable tricycle landing gear, which was an unusual arrangement on German fighters of the day. It is exactly the unusual landing gear arrangement and the clean shape of the fuselage that make it an interesting subject for collectors of small scales.

How to work with photo-etch

In this scale the main enemy is static electricity — parts a fraction of a millimeter across stick to the tweezers and fly off. It helps to work over a light cloth and to have a wet brush at hand, which carries a small part better than tweezers. Cut the fret with a scalpel on glass. Dose the super glue as a drop on foil and pick it up with the point of a pin; excess here floods the surrounding detail at once. The belts and the instrument panel are glued in before the fuselage is closed, so lay the procedure out in advance. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer.

Who the set is for

  • Collectors of aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want to see an interior even in a small scale
  • Those who build prototypes and little-known designs
  • Experienced modelers — the parts are very small

It is a detail accessory, not a model of an aircraft. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check that it matches your own kit.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched detail accessory. The kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately.

The list of parts is in the enclosed instructions.

On the contrary, it is in this scale that photo-etch brings the most — thin sheet can render what plastic cannot manage at such a size. It does call for calm and good light, though.

Before the fuselage is closed. Once the halves are glued together you will not get inside.
