About product

Tiger I Ausf. E 1:16 – photo-etched side fenders from Aber

The set contains photochemically etched metal parts of the side fenders, that is the covers above the running gear, for a large model of the heavy tank in 1:16 scale. It is made by the Polish company Aber, which specializes in metal accessories for models of military equipment. According to the name the version corresponds to machines of the 501st heavy tank battalion in Tunisia. It is not a kit: the model, paints and glues are not part of the package and the set makes sense only as an accessory to a base model.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

On the real vehicle the fenders are sheet metal parts a few millimeters thick, which in 1:16 scale works out to a very thin wall. Injection-molded plastic does not technologically allow such a thickness, so the parts from a kit tend to be markedly oversized and give the scale away immediately at the cut edge. Metal etch not only captures the thinness faithfully but can also be bent, dented or partly removed, so operational damage, which was common on these vehicles, is easy to suggest.

Building and painting tips

In a large scale the parts are sizeable and stiffer, so count on a solid bending tool or at least a steel rule and smooth jaws. Briefly anneal the metal over a flame before shaping; once cooled it is more pliable and does not crack in the fold. Cut on a hard surface with a sharp knife. Degrease the sheet before painting and go over it with a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will peel off the edges. Remove the original plastic fenders and level the seating surfaces so that the metal part sits flush with the hull. It is bonded with super glue, and on large areas a two-part epoxy helps.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large models of armored vehicles in 1:16 scale.
  • Modelers bothered by the thickness of the plastic fenders from a kit.
  • Those who want to suggest operational deformation and missing parts.
  • Experienced modelers with experience of folding photo-etched parts.

This is a collection of accessory parts, not a kit. The model, paints, glues and tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. These are only photo-etched metal parts of the fenders. The base model in 1:16 scale is obtained separately.

Anneal the part briefly over a flame and let it cool. The metal softens and you will then manage the fold in a bending tool or between two straight edges.

They are bonded with super glue, and with epoxy on large areas. Before painting the sheet has to be degreased and sprayed with a primer intended for metal.
