This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:200 scale represents the Saturn V launch vehicle, that is the most striking piece of American space hardware of the 1960s and 1970s. On a subject this tall the 1:200 scale is a practical compromise: the model stays buildable and displayable in an ordinary case, while keeping its pronounced division into individual stages. That is exactly what is most interesting about a model of the Saturn V — the silhouette of the stages, the transition adapters and the propulsion sections.
The Saturn V was a three-stage launch vehicle developed for the Apollo program. The first stage was powered by five F-1 engines on liquid oxygen and kerosene, the second stage by five J-2 engines and the third stage by a single J-2 on liquid oxygen and hydrogen. At the top the rocket carried the assembly with the command and service module, and below it the lunar module was housed in an adapter. The rocket served to carry crews to the Moon and, in a reworked form, also to launch the Skylab orbital station. The black and white markings on the skin of the first stage served, among other things, to track roll during launch and today are among the most recognizable features of the whole vehicle.
Most of the model consists of long split cylinders, so work on the seams is crucial: glue the parts in sections, let the joint dry thoroughly, then fill it and sand progressively from coarser to fine abrasive paper. You make checking the surface easier with a thin coat of primer, which reveals flaws before you lay the white on. White covers poorly, so spray it in several thin coats and preferably over a light surface. Handle the black fields on the skin by masking with kabuki tape or masking film, not with a brush — a crisp edge decides the final impression. Bring the engine sections and the nozzles to life with metallic shades and a fine dark wash. The model is tall and slender, so reckon on a stable base or mounting.
