A set of self-adhesive masks in 1:24 scale for a model of the Junkers Ju 87B dive bomber. According to the name it covers canopy glazing masks for the outside and the inside and masks for the national insignia and other markings. It is not a kit and not decals — the masks serve for spraying. The exact make-up of the sheets, the numbers and the sizes are given in the instructions enclosed with the set.
The Ju 87B was a single-engine two-seat dive bomber with a characteristic inverted gull wing and fixed, faired landing gear. Its structure was adapted to diving: under the wing it had dive brakes limiting the build-up of speed during an attack, and a crutch that swung the bomb clear of the propeller arc. The cockpit consisted of a long, heavily framed greenhouse canopy for the pilot and the rear crew member. The B version was the main production form at the start of the war.
The greenhouse canopy of the Ju 87 is among the most demanding to mask at all — it has dozens of narrow frames and in 1:24 scale each of them is large enough for any unevenness to show at once. Cutting masking tape by hand on a canopy like that would take hours and the result would be uneven. A pre-cut mask shortens that work to minutes and, above all, guarantees that the width of the frames will be the same along their whole length.
Wash the clear parts first in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry in the open air — fingerprints under a mask will make the paint lift. Lay the masks on with tweezers and press the edge down with a toothpick. Spray the frames with the interior color first (with the inside masks), and once that is dry with the exterior shade. Dose the paint thinly: an overloaded coat on clear parts creates a visible step. Lift the masks while the paint has only just set. Remove any adhesive residue with a cotton bud damped in clean water, not in thinner — that would dull the glazing.
