An injection-molded plastic kit of the second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero off-road vehicle, internal designation V24WG, in the XR-II equipment version of 1991. The model in 1:24 scale comes from the Japanese maker Aoshima. The Metal Top designation points to the version with a fixed steel roof instead of a canvas one, and Wide to the wide body with flared fenders.
The second-generation Pajero was introduced at the start of the 1990s and extended its predecessor's range with a more comfortable suspension and a more modern body. The vehicle was offered in both short and long form, and the short version with a fixed roof was among the most recognizable. The wide body with its pronounced fender flares came about because of the wider track and became a recognition feature of the better-equipped versions. The Pajero earned its standing among off-road vehicles mainly through many years of competing in long-distance rallies, which makes it a rewarding subject for model collections even after all this time.
An off-road vehicle will take, indeed demands, a different approach from a sports car. Leave the body in a clean finish, but knock back the underside, the side skirts and the fenders and add a fine dust tone, otherwise the model looks like a show piece rather than a car meant for rough ground. Bring out the coarse tread of the tires with a dry brush in light gray so that the profile stands out. Paint the plastic body additions, that is the fender flares and the bumpers, in matte or semi-gloss black, not in the same finish as the body. Build the interior complete, since on short versions with a fixed roof the rear section is clearly visible through the windows.
