About product

Nissan Cedric and Gloria 4HT 280E Brougham - a kit 1:24 (Aoshima)

An injection-molded plastic kit of a Japanese luxury car in 1:24 scale from the manufacturer Aoshima. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the number of parts, the contents of the package and the extent of the decals are given on the box and in the instructions. The double name in the title matches reality: the Cedric and the Gloria were technically all but identical cars sold side by side through different sales networks, differing mainly in the grille and in details.

The real subject

This is a large Japanese sedan of the late 1970s, that is of the class the domestic makes built against European luxury cars. The abbreviation 4HT in the name denotes a four-door hardtop body, which has no fixed center pillar and no window frames, so with the glass lowered an open gap runs the whole length of the side. The designation 280E corresponds to the power unit, that is an inline six of 2.8 liters with fuel injection, which at that time was replacing carburetors on the top versions. Brougham was the name of the highest trim level with rich upholstery, wood trim and plenty of chrome. The result is a car with an angular body and a great many shiny decorative features.

Building and painting tips

With this subject the chrome is the key. Do the strips around the windows, the bumpers and the grille with metal foil, which is laid on, pressed into the edges and the excess removed with a cotton bud. Chrome paint on such long lines looks duller and uneven. The frameless hardtop windows call for accurate masking of the glazing, because a thin frame is visible at first glance. Finish the body in conservative shades; this type of car suits darker metallics, beiges and two-tone combinations with a different roof. If you want to imitate a vinyl roof, spray the area with a satin coat with a fine texture; the difference in sheen will create the effect by itself. The interior of the top trim is rich, and it pays to shade the seats and to suggest the wood trim. Glue the glazing with cement for clear plastic; ordinary cement will fog it.

FAQ

The Cedric and the Gloria were technically all but identical models sold side by side through different sales networks. They differed mainly in the grille and in decorative details, which a kit usually handles with alternative parts.

A four-door hardtop, that is a body with no fixed center pillar and no frames around the window glass. With the windows lowered an open gap runs the whole length of the side.

With metal foil. It is laid on the part, pressed into the edges and the excess removed. On long lines it looks markedly better than chrome paint applied with a brush.

Yes. It is enough to set the roof area apart with a satin or semi-matte coat, possibly with a fine texture. The difference in sheen against the body creates the effect by itself.
