Cut masks for the cockpit framing of the Curtiss P-40B fighter in the large 1:24 scale. They cover the windscreen and the sliding section from the outside and the inside and carry five sets of masks for national markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Curtiss P-40B was among the first production machines the Allies put up against the Japanese and the German air forces, and it became famous above all for the mouth painted on its radiator. It flew over Burma and southern China, in desert form over North Africa and over Hawaii in December 1941. Each of those deployments meant a different set of national markings, and that is exactly why this set carries five sets of masks for national markings, that is more than is usual in the series.
Markings sprayed through a mask have the advantage that they hold even on a rough desert finish and do not lift at the edges the way the film of a decal does over a curved leading edge. In one twenty-fourth the discs and bands are moreover so large that any imperfection would be visible from a meter away. The sets are cut so that it is possible to work in layers: first the light base of a star or a disc is laid on, then the shape of the marking is placed and finally the surrounding camouflage is sprayed over.
The cockpit glazing of the Tomahawk is a long glazed tunnel with a quantity of straight bars and with a fixed part behind the headrest. The set encloses masks in two layers: one fits the outer frames, the other is cut for the reverse side. Through the clear plastic of a large model the inside is easy to see into, so without the second layer the cockpit stays half finished. Only the masks are in the package; neither the kit nor the paint shades are enclosed.
