About product

Kumigashira in red armor, 1:24 scale, Suyata

An injection-molded plastic kit of a figure in 1:24 scale from the maker Suyata, from a series devoted to the Japanese Sengoku period. It captures a kumigashira, that is, the commander of a foot unit of ashigaru, in a red version of armor. It is a figure kit for gluing and painting, not a finished statuette.

The real subject

In the Japanese feudal armies of the Sengoku period the kumigashira was the commander of a smaller unit of foot soldiers. He stood between the rank-and-file ashigaru and the higher officers: he answered for the training, the discipline and the leading of his unit in combat. The position was usually reflected in the equipment, with better and more ornate armor, a more striking helmet and insignia that allowed the commander to be picked out in the ranks. The Sengoku period, roughly from the fifteenth to the start of the seventeenth century, was a time of internal conflicts in which both the organization of armies and the roles of the commanders of foot units developed markedly.

Building and painting tips

A commander figure usually has more decorated areas than a rank-and-file foot soldier, so it pays to assemble the whole dry and decide which parts of the armor you will paint separately. Trim the parting seams with a scalpel and sand them with fine paper. Apply cement for plastic with a brush into the seam and very sparingly, as it easily floods small parts. Red needs an opaque base: apply it over a light base, or it comes across muddy. A wash runs into the seams between the lamellae; lighten the upper edges. Model the skin with thinned glazes. Finish the metal fittings with a light gloss on the edges, and do not overdo the patina.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in the Japanese history of the Sengoku period
  • collectors of figure kits in 1:24 scale
  • modelers who want to add a commander figure to a group
  • builders practicing the painting of armor and skin

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

In the rank, which the name gives. Differences in armament and rendering are shown on the box.

It is not. This is a kit of plastic parts on a sprue, which are cut off, glued and then painted.

Apply it over a light opaque base in thin coats. Straight on dark plastic, red comes across muddy and uneven.
