An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese Toyota Celica XX sports coupe in the 2800GT version, scale 1:24. This is a classic automotive subject from the Tamiya lineup, that is a road car rather than a racing special or a piece of military hardware. The build revolves around the body with its long hood, the glazing, the interior and the wheels, so the quality of the paint and the cleanliness of the fit of the separate parts will show on the result more than anything else.
Celica XX was the name under which a larger and better equipped coupe derived from the Celica was sold on the Japanese home market. The 2800GT version received an inline six-cylinder engine of roughly 2.8 liters, which made the car a fast touring coupe rather than a sharp sports car. Pop-up headlights and the angular lines of the early 1980s are the characteristic features of the body. On export markets the same model was sold under a different trade name.
With a road car the paint decides everything. First clean the flash and the mold parting lines off the body, then lay down a primer and the color in several thin coats. Gloss comes from a clear coat over the top followed by polishing with fine compounds, not from a thicker layer of paint. Glue the glazing with cement for clear parts, because ordinary plastic cement will fog the glass. The interior deserves at least a two-tone treatment and a fine wash in the recesses. Leave the chrome parts for last and protect them with masking.
