A model of the SR16 carbine in 1:3 scale from Easy Model

This example is not a kit. Easy Model supplies it finished, with the surface finish done, so gluing, filling and painting all fall away. For a good many collectors that is the main reason to reach for a finished model: they want an exhibit for a display case, not another unfinished project on the bench. The 1:3 scale matches that; the model is roughly a third of the size of the real subject and comes across as a standalone display piece.

The real subject

The SR-16 is an American 5.56 mm carbine from the AR-15 design family. Against the longer precision rifles of the same family it has a shorter barrel and is built for agility and handling in a confined space. A characteristic feature is the free-float handguard with mounting rails, to which optics and accessories are attached, and the flat rail on the upper part of the receiver. The layout of the controls matches the rest of the AR family, and the individual variants differ from one another mainly in the length of the barrel, the handguard and the muzzle end used.

What you can examine on the model

The large scale is the main added value. Details that are only suggested on small models are legible here: the division of the rails, the transition from the receiver into the handguard and the shape of the stock. The model is therefore rewarding as a demonstration aid as well, when you want to show someone how the individual variants of the AR family differ. In a display case it looks good laid horizontally, or tilted on a simple stand so that the profile is visible.
