An accessory set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard that holds accurate castings of the AIM-4D guided missile in 1:32 scale. It is neither a model of an aircraft nor a kit — it is a stand-alone accessory meant to be fitted to a model you already have built or under construction. The parts are made in a fine material that allows sharper edges and finer surface detail than injected plastic can manage, which in 1:32 scale shows up well on the thin fins and on the panel breakdown of the missile body.
AIM-4 is the designation of an American short-range air-to-air guided missile of the 1950s and 1960s. The version designated D used infrared homing on a heat source and was carried under the wings as well as on the fuselage pylons of the fighters of the day. In design it is a slender body with cruciform control and stabilizing surfaces and a nose fitted with a transparent cover over the seeker. The set carries this geometry over into scale without the simplifications that arise when molding in a die.
First wash the castings in warm water with a drop of dish soap so that no mold release residue is left on the surface — otherwise the paint would not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw rather than nippers and sand the cut; use respiratory protection when sanding and work wet if you can. It is bonded exclusively with super glue, as ordinary plastic cement will not join this material. Lay down a base coat before painting, ideally sprayed, and add the pylons only once it has dried, so that the geometry of the installation does not shift.
The package holds only the accessory parts. The model, glue and paints are not part of it. It is a technical accessory depicting period aircraft armament.
