A decal sheet in the large 1:32 scale with the markings of a single Avro Lancaster bomber: the machine with serial number NX554, the code letters ZL-F and the nose art Fannin Fanny. Waterslide decals for transfer onto a finished painted model.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet covers the markings of one particular aircraft, not a general set of national insignia. This is an Avro Lancaster with serial number NX554, which carried the code pair ZL and the individual letter F on the fuselage. The code pair ZL belonged to No. 427 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, that is one of the Canadian units assigned to No. 6 Group of Bomber Command and operating from English airfields.
The four engine Lancaster came about through a reworking of the unsuccessful twin engine Manchester and became the most capable British night bomber of the war. Four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines provided the power. The bomb bay was the key thing, though: uninterrupted along the whole length of the underside of the fuselage, it carried even the largest loads of the day, which other Allied types could not manage. The crew numbered seven men.
The printing is made as a waterslide decal. A cut out motif is left in lukewarm water to release from the backing paper and is transferred onto a glossy painted area, because on a matte surface air would be left under the carrier film. Once dry, a decal softener helps it settle into the panel lines and a final top coat hides the edge of the film.
