A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:32 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. It is devoted to one particular BAe Hawk T.1A trainer with the serial number XX285, which in 2007 wore a special finish for the squadron's anniversary together with yellow and blue trim. The package is an accessory for a model and contains no plastic parts.
Anniversary finishes are common practice in training units: one selected machine is given a conspicuous color treatment for a limited time, while the other aircraft stay in the standard service finish. That is precisely why such machines are popular among modelers, as they turn an ordinary trainer into a striking display piece. The Hawk T.1A is a British two-seat subsonic aircraft for advanced training, modified so that it can carry armament.
Anniversary schemes stand or fall on large-area decals that follow the fuselage and the tail surfaces. With the larger pieces it is worth dividing the decal with a scalpel into two or three logical segments along a panel line, at the edge of the fin or where the shape changes. A divided decal settles without creases and a join in the right place is practically invisible, whereas trying to fit the whole piece at once usually ends with the film folded over. Work with plenty of water under the decal and squeeze the excess out from the center toward the edges with a soft cloth. Apply the softener only once it is settled and let it work without intervention, because touching a softened film means a certain fingerprint. Even out the colored base under the trim before application, so that the shades do not differ.
