Masking shapes for the angular cockpit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 in 1:32 scale. They cover the outer and the inner face of the glazing plus a pair of national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Emil in its E-3 version entered service at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s and its cockpit was among the tightest that the fighters of the day had. The canopy hinged to the side like a door, the glass was divided into many small areas and the framing took up almost half the area. Pilots complained about the view, but the designers did not want to change anything, because the rigid cage protected the head in a roll-over.
It is with this type in particular that it makes sense to think in advance about whether the cockpit will stay open. A closed canopy hides a substantial part of the interior thanks to the dense framing, and what is left remains behind slightly distorting glass. Anyone building the Emil closed can skimp on the interior and nobody will hold it against them. Anyone who opens the canopy puts the seat, the side console and the anti-roll frame on display and has to finish them in detail. The mask helps in both cases; it is only in the second that its inner half shows.
Two canopy masks are supplied, that is for the outer and the inner surface, and two insignia motifs. The cut shapes are taken off the sheet and laid on the edge of the frame, so the work with a scalpel directly on the clear part falls away.
A densely divided canopy tempts you to stick the shapes on quickly and hope that small deviations will get lost. In a large scale, though, nothing gets lost. It pays to press the edge of every piece down with a wooden stick and only then to spray, otherwise the paint bleeds and the line of the frame blurs along its whole length.
