This is not a stand-alone aircraft model but a resin accessory that turns a standard Messerschmitt Bf 110 kit into the night version fitted with the period Spanner-Anlage infrared equipment. The extent of the work on the kit is moderate: the set adds the characteristic equipment of the aircraft, and the rest of the build follows the original instructions.
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was a German twin-engine heavy fighter that, after its losses in daylight combat, made its name above all in the night fighter role. The D variant was created as a long-range conversion with increased fuel capacity. In the early period of night fighting, before airborne radar came into wide use, the Luftwaffe tried the Spanner-Anlage infrared observation equipment, which was meant to help the crew pick up the heat traces of enemy aircraft exhausts in the dark. In practice the device did not prove itself and radar soon replaced it, but on a model it is an exceptionally interesting and rarely seen detail.
Wash the resin parts in warm soapy water before gluing to remove any mold release agent, and the paint will then hold reliably. Glue the parts with cyanoacrylate glue, as ordinary plastic cement will not bond resin. Luftwaffe night machines invite dark schemes; a flat surface and light panel highlighting keep the large area of the model looking three-dimensional.
