About product

Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet, a mask for US stars 1:32 (MH models)

This set from MH models belongs among the painting masks for 1:32 scale and is cut for the American star national insignia. Neither the model itself nor the paints are in the package: it is an accessory that is stuck onto a finished varnished surface and oversprayed with an airbrush.

The real subject

The Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet was an American training biplane with two open cockpits in tandem, fixed landing gear and a radial engine. It served as the basic training machine on which a large part of American pilots went through elementary training, and it was built in large numbers. Its robust construction gave it a long life even after its service ended, when a number of machines went into civil use.

Pressing the edge down against runs

The most common mistake with sprayed stars is not poor placement but a blurred edge. Paint runs everywhere the mask has not settled on the edge. Before you start spraying, go around the whole outline of the mask, ideally with the rounded end of a toothpick or with a burnisher, and literally burnish the edge into the finish. Watch out for places where the insignia runs across an engraved line or across a rib of the covering: that is where the edge lifts most and needs pressing down repeatedly. It also helps to hold the airbrush perpendicular to the surface and to spray dry from the center outward rather than at an angle under the edge of the mask. If a run does appear, repair it only after it has dried completely, by scraping gently with the tip of a scalpel and respraying locally.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Kaydet training biplane in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want a sharp edge on the insignia without decal film
  • Anyone interested in training machines and their striking schemes
  • Airbrush users with a feel for pressure and nozzle distance

The set is a masking accessory and not a kit. The aircraft model and the paints are not supplied with it, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Almost always because of an edge that was not pressed down or a rough surface. Burnish the outline of the mask into the finish with a toothpick and spray perpendicularly, never at an angle under the edge.

It helps considerably. On a smooth glossy surface the mask seals, while on a matte grainy layer paint runs even with good pressure.

According to the name the set is focused on the national insignia. Masking the open cockpits on this type is easily done with crepe tape.

The exact type of insignia is not stated here. Before you use the set, compare the shape of the mask with the scheme you want to build.
