This decal sheet from the specialist manufacturer Aviattic brings a five-color polygonal lozenge pattern for the tail surfaces of the German Fokker D.VII fighter built under license by the Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke (OAW). The sheet is printed on a clear backing (clear decal paper) and the artwork also holds fabric rib tapes, so the tail surfaces get a complete covering that is true to scale.
During the First World War the German air service introduced covering fabric with a preprinted polygonal camouflage, known as the lozenge. The five-color version is among the most widespread; the colored polygons broke up the outline of the aircraft and, compared with sprayed camouflage, saved both weight and production time. Machines from OAW production differed in details of workmanship from those of the parent Fokker factory, so the right pattern on the tail surfaces is an important recognition detail for a faithful build.
A clear backing lets the color laid under the decal show through, so spray the areas with a light glossy shade first; by toning it you can gently change the final character of the covering. Lay the decals on section by section, push the water out with a soft squeegee and use softener to settle them onto the edges. Cut the rib tapes into strips with a sharp knife and apply them over the lines of the ribs only once the main areas are dry. Finally fix everything with a satin or matte clear coat.
