This decal sheet from the British brand Aviattic reproduces the protective finish PC10 in its medium tonal version, intended for the upper surfaces of the Sopwith Dolphin fighter in 1:32 scale. Instead of a uniform sprayed color it offers the drawing of doped fabric with a fine texture and the natural unevenness of the surface. The sheet is printed on a clear decal backing, so the final shade is created partly by the color laid under the decal: a lighter base brightens the pattern, a darker one subdues it.
The Sopwith Dolphin was a British fighter of 1918, unusual at first glance for the negative stagger of its wings, which gave the pilot an excellent view upwards. The upper and side surfaces of British machines were protected by PC10, a pigmented dope whose actual shade varied with the maker of the fabric, the number of coats and age, from green-brown to dark brown. The medium designation on this sheet corresponds to the middle of those tones. The lower surfaces usually stayed in the appearance of clear doped fabric.
The foundation of success is a careful base color: spray a uniform light shade and bring the surface to a gloss so that the decal adheres without silvering. Cut the segments to the individual panels and areas, settle them with softener and push the water out from the center to the edges. On the large areas of the wings work in parts and watch how the drawing carries over. Once dry, even the whole out with clear; a satin finish catches doped fabric well.
