HGW Fabric simulation - a white base with a cloth structure in 1:32

This set is not a model of an airplane but a decorative decal film in 1:32 scale. The white decal with the structure of woven cloth serves as a base layer: it is applied to the surface of the model, gives it the relief of a covering and is then painted over in the shade required. The white base at the same time ensures clean and saturated painting. The manufacturer is the Czech firm HGW.

The real subject

Fabric-covered aircraft had a surface formed by taut cloth stiffened with dope, with a fine woven structure. On a smooth plastic model this relief is missing. A white textured base supplies it and at the same time creates an ideal light foundation for applying the final color.

Use and tips

Apply the decal to a smooth, varnished base with a decal softener, so that it adheres to the shape. Once it is perfectly dry, spray the surface with the target color; the structure of the cloth shows through even under a thin layer of spray. Work with plenty of water and shape the edges carefully.
