HGW 1:32 Fokker Dr.I masking set holds cut masking templates for a model of the famous triplane. They make it possible to apply the color by spraying instead of with decals, so the result has no glossy edges and no silvering.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is neither a model nor a kit; it is an accessory to the triplane in the large 1:32 scale. The templates are pre-cut and self-adhesive, are applied to the right place, the other areas are covered and the color is applied with an airbrush. Once the mask is peeled off, a crisp and clean shape is left that is part of the paint layer and not of a foreign film laid on the surface.
Models from this period usually have a markedly textured surface, that is stretched fabric with protruding ribs, lacing and striping. A decal will never lie fully over such waves, and even after a softener air stays under it and announces itself after drying with silver specks. Sprayed paint has no such problem: it follows the texture perfectly, can be weathered and worn like the rest of the finish and will never yellow the way an old decal sheet does. It is precisely in large scales, where every surface detail is legible, that the difference pays off.
The Fokker Dr.I was a German single-seat fighter triplane from the end of the First World War. The characteristic trio of short lifting surfaces above one another gave it a small span and high agility, it was powered by a rotary engine and the armament consisted of a pair of machine guns firing through the propeller arc. It was built in a fairly small number and stayed in operational service only briefly, yet it is among the best-known aircraft of its day.
The surface must be dry and smooth. Lay the mask with tweezers and press the edges down properly with a toothpick or a blunt tool, because seepage almost always arises at an edge that has not been pressed down. Apply the paint in several really thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, not at an angle under it. A heavy coat will also create a step at the edge that is visible once the mask is removed. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly dry, not after days, and draw it back over itself at a sharp angle rather than straight up. Choose the order of the colors from light to dark, so that you cover with as few layers as possible.
This is not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
