An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Fokker Dr.I triplane in 1:32 scale from Meng, supplemented with a resin bust of Manfred von Richthofen in 1:10 scale. The bust is the main added value of this edition: one box gives you a model of the aircraft and a separate collector piece. The kit contains gray plastic sprues, a clear sprue, a photo-etched fret (seat belts, machine gun jackets) and decals with several marking options. A detailed rotary engine and a cockpit interior are included as well. The finished model has a span of around 22.5 cm.
The Fokker Dr.I was a single-seat fighter triplane of the German air service from the end of the First World War, committed to combat in 1917. Three lifting surfaces one above the other gave it plenty of lift on a small span, and the result was a steep rate of climb and exceptional agility, paid for with a lower top speed. It was powered by a rotary engine, that is a type in which the whole cylinder block turned with the propeller. The structure was built around a steel tube fuselage frame with fabric covering. Manfred von Richthofen, with 80 confirmed victories the most successful fighter pilot of the First World War, flew the Fokker Dr.I; he gained the nickname Red Baron from his red-painted machine. He was killed in action in April 1918. The Dr.I was in service for a relatively short time, but its silhouette is one of the most recognizable in the history of aviation.
The key is the true and symmetrical seating of all three wings and of the interplane struts; help yourself with spacers and let the glue cure thoroughly. Compared with other machines of its era the Dr.I has relatively few bracing wires, but it pays to plan the rigging in advance: mark and drill the holes before gluing. Let the fabric covering read gently, because overdone emphasis on the ribs looks unconvincing. A light base, brown glazes and a gloss coat give the wooden propeller a convincing look. The engine is partly visible once the model is finished, so paint it before you close the fuselage. Glue with liquid cement for plastic, spray the model with a base color and put a gloss coat under the decals. Build the bust separately: wash the parts free of the mold release agent, cut off the casting blocks, glue with cyanoacrylate glue and protect your airways when sanding the resin.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
