Self-adhesive Montex masks in 1:32 scale for a model of the Gloster Gladiator Mk.I fighter biplane in British service. According to the name they hold canopy glazing masks for the outside and the inside and two sets of marking masks. It is not a model and not decals — it is an aid with which you spray the canopy frames and the national insignia in paint directly onto the surface. The particular extent of the sheets and the numbers of masks are given in the instructions enclosed with the set.
The Gladiator Mk.I was the first production form of the last British fighter biplane in front-line service. It combined an older airframe concept with features that then became standard: an enclosed cockpit and four-gun machine gun armament. In the second half of the 1930s it was ordinary equipment for British fighter squadrons, and it is therefore most typical in British colors — both the silver finish of the interwar machines and the later camouflage.
With masked markings the order decides everything. First finish the base camouflage and let it cure properly, ideally overnight. Only then lay the insignia masks on. With multi-color roundels you work from the lightest shade to the darkest, and a short set between layers is enough. Lift them as soon as possible after spraying and with a pull back at an angle — if a mask stays on the model too long, the adhesive can grip firmly enough to tear the base paint away. On fabric covering with raised ribs, check as well whether the mask has settled everywhere; otherwise an uneven edge will form.
The inside masks go on before the canopy is built in. Painting the frames from inside removes a typical shortcoming of models — the view through the glass onto bare clear plastic. In the large 1:32 scale the cockpit is clearly visible, so that work is worth doing.
