Masks for the early version of the Hawker Hurricane in 1:32 scale. They mask the sliding canopy from both faces and bring three national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hurricane was built the old way. The basis of the airframe was not a stressed skin but a welded frame of steel tubes over which fabric was stretched and to which panels were attached. That is precisely why its cockpit looks different from those of contemporary all-metal fighters: tubular struts, cross members and diagonals are visible around the seat that on other machines a smooth fuselage wall hides. It made life simpler for the mechanics during the war, because shot-through tubes could be replaced under field conditions in a couple of hours.
Anyone building a Hurricane with the canopy slid back is really building two models. The interior is busy, it carries more edges than a smoothly lined cockpit and light plays in it. For that impression to hold, the frame of the glazing must not stay clear, otherwise one glowing strip jumps out of the whole structure and the eye stops on exactly that. An inner mask is therefore more necessary here than on aircraft with a closed cockpit.
A pair of shapes for the glazing covering both faces and, with them, three national insignia motifs. The shapes are ready-made and are taken off the sheet.
The tubular frame around the seat was painted before the cockpit was closed, and the same holds on a model. So the inner shapes and the interior shade come first, then assembly and finally the outer mask with the camouflage. Once the canopy is in place, a brush can no longer reach the inner face of the frame.
Unused shapes will last on their backing for years if you keep them flat and out of direct sunlight. A warped sheet is harder to lift from and the edges tear as the pieces are taken off.
