About product

Japanese WWII Fighter Pilot or Japanese WWII Kamikaze Pilot 1:32, an Aerobonus figure

A figure cast in modeling resin in 1:32 scale, intended to complete a model of an aircraft, a diorama or a cabinet. The name allows for two readings of the same figure of a Japanese pilot from the Second World War period; whether the package contains alternative parts allowing both forms is stated on the box. It is not a kit of an aircraft or a finished model; you are buying a casting to complete yourself.

The casting and its preparation

Cast resin captures fine detail that injection-molded plastic cannot reach at this scale, but it calls for a different procedure from a plastic kit. First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry; otherwise the mold release agent stops the paint from adhering. The casting blocks tend to be led into the base or the heels of the figure so that they do not reach into the visible surfaces; cut them off with a fine saw or a new blade, sand the remainder down, and under no circumstances snap them off. Run a file and fine sandpaper over the parting seam left by the mold on the sides of the figure, and fill any small bubbles. Protect your airways while sanding. Join any separate parts with cyanoacrylate glue.

Painting

The basis is a thin primer. Build the face and hands up on a mid flesh layer, into which a darker shadow in the recesses and a lighter tone on the raised areas are added; oil paints allow slow blending, acrylics a quicker approach. Fabric parts are brought to life by a wash running into the folds and a light dry brush on the edges. Leather elements will take more gloss than cloth. Leave the harness, the buckles and the small fittings until the end and apply them with a fine brush. Finally a matte coat, which evens out the surface and protects the paint.

Who the figure is for

  • modelers building aircraft in 1:32 scale who want a human figure beside the machine for scale
  • builders of dioramas and cabinet compositions
  • more experienced modelers used to working with resin
  • anyone interested in painting figures with oil paints or acrylics

The figure is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name gives two possible readings of the same figure. Whether alternative parts are in the package is stated on the box; expect one figure rather than two.

No. It is supplied as a resin casting in the color of the material. The painting and any gluing are up to you.

Cut it off with a fine saw or a new blade a little away from the surface and sand the remainder down. Snapping resin risks breaking a piece off the leg or the base.

Yes, acrylics as well as oil paints, provided you wash the casting first and seal it with primer. Without primer the paint is easily rubbed off the smooth surface.
