The real subject

The Sukhoi Su-25 is a ground-attack aircraft intended for close support of ground units. It was created in the 1970s, flies at subsonic speed low over the battlefield and its crew sits in an armored cockpit. The Su-25UB version is two-seat, the seats are in tandem and the rear one is raised so that the instructor has a view forward. It is precisely because of the long canopy glazing that masking is more laborious on this version than on the single-seat machine.

What the set of masks is for

The masks are pre-cut parts that are stuck onto the area that is to stay free of paint. Against hand-cut tape they have two advantages: the shape matches the part, so a canopy frame comes out the same width along its whole length, and the work takes a fraction of the time. The set is tied to both the type and the scale, that is to models of the Su-25UB in 1:32 scale. The words Blue 60 set the variant apart within the range, and the extent of the set is given by the manufacturer in the instructions, which also state which kit the set is cut for.

How to use the masks

• Stick the masks on before spraying, onto a clean, dry and degreased surface.
• Press the edge of a mask down with a toothpick so that paint does not creep under it.
• Spray perpendicular and in thin coats; a heavy coat will creep under.
• Take a mask off soon after the paint has dried, not days later, or it will tear the paint off.
• Peel at a shallow angle, with pointed tweezers and without a jerk.
