About product

Ki-43 II and III Hayabusa control surfaces 1:72 (CMK)

The package contains resin replacement control surfaces, not an aircraft model. They are used by cutting the original plastic part out of the finished wing and tail surfaces and setting a separate casting in its place, which can be glued deflected. On Japanese fighters of the Second World War this operation has a particular justification: the rudders and ailerons were covered with fabric stretched over a frame, and between the ribs the surface sags slightly. Injection-molded plastic in 1:72 scale almost never captures such a structure, while a resin casting does.

How to set the surfaces

The deflection is not arbitrary and it pays to follow the logic of the real machine. On a parked aircraft with no pressure in the system the ailerons droop under their own weight, the rudder tends to be deflected only slightly and the elevator often drops down. If you are building the model in a diorama with a figure in the cockpit, it makes sense to match the position of the surfaces with what the pilot is doing. Do not overdo it: an exaggerated angle looks unnatural and on top of that reveals every inaccuracy in the gluing.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the castings in warm soapy water. Cut off the casting blocks, level the mating edge by sanding and protect your airways while sanding resin. They are glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue. Make the cut into the wing along the engraved outline of the surface, with a fine saw and preferably a little inside the surface you are cutting away; you will finish the rest with a file. Fill and sand the gap between the new part and the wing. Apply a primer before painting, and then paint the fabric surfaces together with the rest of the model so that no difference in shade appears.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Japanese fighters in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want to finish the model in a dynamic pose
  • those who dare to cut into a finished wing
  • anyone interested in a more faithful structure of fabric surfaces

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base Special Hobby kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The control surfaces, that is the parts that in a plastic kit are molded in one piece with the wing and the tail. The original parts have to be cut away.

Cutting into a finished wing calls for a steady hand and patience. If you have never cut resin before, it is worth trying the procedure first on an old model.

On a parked aircraft the ailerons and the elevator droop under their own weight, and the rudder tends to be deflected slightly. Exaggerated angles look unnatural.
