Die-cut self-adhesive masks from the National Insignia Series line of the Polish maker Pmask, for a model of the Airacobra in British form in the large 1:32 scale. The national insignia are sprayed through the template, so they arise directly in the finish. Both the carrier film and the risk of a decal edge catching the light on a matte surface fall away.

The real subject

The Airacobra was only a brief episode with the Royal Air Force. It was an unusual design, with the engine mounted behind the pilot and a nosewheel landing gear, but its performance at higher altitudes did not meet British requirements and operational use stayed limited. Most of the aircraft ordered ended up with other operators.

Use and tips

• Apply the template only to a fully cured finish.
• Press the edges down thoroughly, so that paint cannot creep under them.
• In a large scale, spray in several passes and in thin coats.
• Take the mask off at a shallow angle while the paint is only tacky.
