About product

Reskit 1:32 — wheels for the T-28 Trojan (T-28A, T-28B), naval form

A resin replacement wheel set for a kit of the North American T-28 Trojan trainer in 1:32 scale, in the form for naval use. It is not a model of the aircraft, but a detail accessory: the resin casting has a crisp tread pattern and a legible hub shape and has no parting plane, which on plastic wheels you would have to sand away — and every such sanding damages the tread pattern beyond repair. The maker runs Trojan wheels divided both by groups of versions and by whether the machine operated from a deck or from land bases; this item is the naval form for the T-28A and T-28B versions.

The real subject

The North American T-28 Trojan is a two-seat trainer with a piston radial engine and a nosewheel undercarriage, which from the turn of the 1940s and 1950s served for basic as well as advanced training. The T-28A is the original version for the air force, the T-28B is the naval trainer version with a more powerful engine. The Trojan later saw combat derivatives as well, but in the training role it stayed in service for a very long time and in civilian hands it flies to this day. The undercarriage stays partly visible even when retracted, so extra work on the wheels tells.

Building and painting tips

First wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent because of the release agent from the mold, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a fine cutter; do not snap them. True the cuts up with fine abrasive paper, ideally wet and with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; cement for plastic will not join resin. Apply a primer before painting. Set the tire off from the hub with the shade — dark gray with a hint of brown looks truer than pure black — and bring out the lettering on the sidewall with a light dark wash. Trainers with prominent high-visibility areas take a somewhat cleaner overall look than combat aircraft.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Trojan in the large 1:32 scale
  • Modelers with experience of resin accessories
  • Those building specifically the T-28A or T-28B version in its naval form

This is an add-on set, not a model of the aircraft. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The maker runs the naval and the land-based configuration as two separate items, because the wheels differ between machines operating from a deck and from hard surfaces. The name does not say in what exactly — so compare photographs of the machine you are building.

No. It is a set of replacement wheels in resin, which you use on a plastic Trojan kit you have already bought.

No, this one is listed for the T-28A and T-28B. For the later versions the maker has separate sets, again in both a naval and a land-based form.

Cyanoacrylate. Cement for plastic will not dissolve resin and the joint would not hold.
