About product

P-47 national insignia 1942-1943, HGW wet transfers in 1:32 scale

A wet transfer looks at first glance like a decal, but it works differently and above all it ends differently. A classic decal stays on the model together with its carrier film, which on a matte surface gives away a glossy island. With a wet transfer the carrier film is taken off once it has dried and only the color layer itself is left on the surface. The marking then sits directly on the paint and looks as though it had been sprayed through a mask. It is precisely on large national insignia, which take up a lot of area, that this difference shows most.

Which subject the set belongs to

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was an American single-seat fighter with a radial engine and a turbocharger, one of the heaviest single-engine fighters of its day. It entered combat in 1943 and in the European theater served at first as an escort fighter, later mainly as a fighter-bomber. The period of 1942 and 1943 is interesting from the point of view of markings because the American national insignia changed during it. First the red center was dropped from the star in a circle, later the side bars were added and with them briefly a red surround, which was soon replaced by blue. The set is aimed precisely at that transitional period.

Application tips

The surface has to be smooth and glossy, otherwise air is trapped under the transfer. Cut the insignia out with a small overlap, soak it and let it stand until the film releases from the backing. Straighten the transferred marking with a soft brush and draw off the excess water so that it does not seep underneath. Take the carrier film off only once the transfer is completely dry, carefully and from the edge. Do not hurry, as a damp layer tears. Finally go over the whole model with a matte or satin varnish, so that the transition between the marking and the paint evens out completely.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large Thunderbolt models in 1:32 scale who are bothered by the glossy edges of decals.
  • Modelers building a machine from the first period of service who need period-correct insignia.
  • Those who want to weather and wear the markings in the same way as the paint under them.

This is not a kit. The set is an accessory to a model that you obtain separately, along with glue, paints and varnishes.

FAQ

Once it has dried the carrier film is taken off it and only the color layer is left on the model. The glossy edge and the silvering are thus gone and the marking looks as though it had been sprayed through a mask.

No. This is purely a set of markings. The kit in 1:32 scale, the paints and the varnishes are obtained separately.

The American national insignia changed several times in 1942 and 1943. The set is aimed at the form from that transitional period, so that the markings match the time you are building.

Yes, we recommend it. On a smooth glossy surface the transfer settles without air bubbles and the film then comes off cleanly.
