Decals for the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt in 1:32 scale. Two markings options of the 61st Fighter Squadron, one in European camouflage and the other in polished metal, let you build a machine from Halesworth as well as a later aircraft from Boxted.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt was the heaviest single engine fighter of the war and its eighteen-cylinder radial with a turbocharger did best high above the ground. The set captures the moment when the look of the American squadrons in England was changing: older machines still carried olive green camouflage with a gray underside, whereas newer ones arrived from the factory in bare duralumin and the shine of metal became the hallmark of 1944.
The first option belongs to the aircraft coded HV-A of the 61st Fighter Squadron, which was led at the time by Francis Gabreski, and corresponds to the period when the unit operated from Halesworth airfield. The second option carries the code HV-M and the personal name Pengie, that is the machine of the Polish pilot Mike Gladych, who flew from Boxted with the same squadron. One set therefore offers both appearances, the matte and the metal one.
Bright metal needs a smooth base, otherwise every scratch left by sanding stands out. It pays to indicate the transition between panels of differing shade before the decals, because masking tape is reluctant to stick over them. Anyone who wants to go into detail can set off the plates around the exhausts on the metal version with a warmer tone.
Place the decal in lukewarm water, let it come free of the backing and slide it onto a dampened area. As long as there is a film of water under it, it can be moved. Squeeze the air out with a soft cloth from the center outward and let the area dry without touching it. A complete cockpit, plastic parts and a pot of paint are not in this item.
